Hi.

Welcome to my happy little corner of the internet where I write about fun, books, travels, and mis-adventures. Hope you have a nice stay!

You done grown up, son

You done grown up, son

My son is going to 5th grade science camp next week. How… the… {confused look}…

ISN’T HE STILL A THIRD GRADER WHO IS SAD ABOUT HIS MUSTACHE ON MUSTACHE DAY?

I can’t even.

But since I apparently DO “even,” I thought I’d share the letter that I wrote him with y’all. They’ll be opening these the second night of camp, presumably when they’re at the peak of loneliness. Or, in the case of my kid, about five hours after he’s actually forgotten who we are.

I think I’ve covered both bases and several possible additional scenarios with my letter.

Dear Aidan,

I hope you’re enjoying science camp. :)

When I was your age, I didn’t know what to expect at camp. Would I feel lonely? Would I feel scared? Would I feel brave? I honestly didn’t know.

Looking back, 5th grade science camp is one of my earliest and brightest memories. I remember how exciting it felt to ride the bus and how awesome it was to hang out with my friends for a whole week WITHOUT PARENTS!!!! I was so scared to do the night hike, but so proud of myself after it was done.

I hope that you feel proud about all the new experiences you’ve had and all of the ways you’ve grown. I can’t wait to hear your stories.

Your dad and I love you so much, and we miss you tons. Can’t wait to see you Friday.

Love,

Mom (& Dad)

PS. Don’t lick the banana slugs unless the counselor tells you it’s okay.

PPS. Don’t get kicked out of camp for partying too much or going commando.

PPPS. I repeat, don’t lick the banana slugs. Seriously.

If anyone wants to start a pool on whether Aidan licks a banana slug, I’ll take your money. You can find me somewhere at the intersection of trying to convince everyone that I’m not crying (there’s just something in my eye… for days) and let’s celebrate temporary empty nest status by eating all the things at all of the nice restaurants.
